MMM....Cake!

Nina and Mimi decorate a cake together, April 1990.

Grandmother's cake plate -- the partial story of a family heirloom.

The journaling reads:

Grandmother Mann’s Cake Plate

Nina decorated Granddaddy’s birthday cake on Easter Sunday, 1990.  Nina, at 6 years old, had definite ideas about decorating a cake.  Everything had to be taste tested first!

When Daddy died in 2004, I asked Kathleen if she objected to me taking Grandmother’s cake plate. I pointed up to it, high on the top shelf.  Kathleen replied that SHE had purchased that cake plate for Mimi a few years previously.

Later, I pointed out the cake plate to Edward and before I could tell him the story, he said it had been Aunt Emily’s, and he had been sent over to their house to borrow it for Mimi on more than one occasion.

We found 2 other glass cake plates, and on seeing them all together, we decided, and Kathleen agreed, that she had probably bought one of the others for Mimi.

This makes more sense, as the others were round, and covered, making the cake much more portable to church and other functions.

And this sweet, antique cake stand was Grandmother’s, went to Emily, then to Mimi, and now to me. I had to make a carrot cake to make it officially mine!

MMMM   CAKE!
